fe/male
poster project
in an underground-station (U4 Braunschweiggasse) in Vienna 1st - 31st of August, 2001
Taken out of the arts’ context into the space usually reserved for advertisements the photographs irritate twice: on one hand be- cause they cannot be identified with a special product or event like usual posters and on the other hand because the persons shown on them cannot be categorised as male or female. The variability of possible conceptions of life are reflected in the photographs shown in the project fe/male. |
|
They present different images of the theme “androgynous”, combining masculine and femi- nine qualities and abolishing them. Besides documentations of people transgres- sing the categories of male and female in their everyday life there are dramatic stagings ar- ranged only for the camera. Subtle combina- tions of contradictory elements, exaggerations of classical gender roles or experimental imi- tations of “the other” irritate and undermine simple assignations. The photographs chal- lenge traditional limitations and show myste- rious fantasies and playful inventions of iden- tities behind the categories.
The project is organised by camera magenta, a group of artists and cultural historians from Vienna and Berlin. Collaborations
to show the project in Berlin and on the Jersey Islands, GB in 2002 are planned. contact: camera.magenta@gmx.net
